Doswell, Virginia — The sound of laughter, thrill rides, and summer fun filled the air as more than 100 campers from the local police-sponsored youth Summer Camp spent an unforgettable day at Kings Dominion last week. The field trip was part of the organization’s ongoing commitment to provide safe, enriching, and exciting experiences for local youth during the summer months.
Children from ages 6 to 14, accompanied by camp staff and police mentors, explored the amusement park’s many attractions — from roller coasters and water rides to kid-friendly zones and interactive games. For many of the campers, it was their very first time visiting a theme park.
“This was the best day ever,” said Sarai, age 10, with a wide grin after riding the park’s legendary Dominator coaster. “I got to hang out with my friends, go on rides, and even ride a roller coaster with Officer Jenkins!”
The day trip was made possible through community sponsorships and fundraising efforts that help keep the summer camp low-cost or free for families. Local law enforcement officers who serve as mentors within the program joined in on the fun, not just as chaperones, but as role models — deepening relationships with the youth in a relaxed, positive setting.
“Our goal isn’t just to supervise these kids — it’s to connect with them,” said Officer Marcus Jenkins, who leads the camp’s Youth Leadership Council. “Trips like this help break down barriers and build trust between youth and law enforcement.”
In addition to the thrills, campers enjoyed a picnic lunch, cooling off at Soak City, and even group cheers at the live entertainment shows throughout the park. The staff coordinated carefully to ensure all children were safe, accounted for, and had a memorable time.
“Field trips like this aren’t just about fun — they’re about creating lifelong memories, building social confidence, and rewarding our campers for their dedication to growth and learning this summer,” said Tanya Mitchell, Program Director.
The Kings Dominion trip was just one of many exciting activities planned for this year’s summer camp, which includes weekly themed programming, leadership workshops, sports clinics, and educational field trips. As the summer continues, the organization remains committed to keeping kids engaged, active, and inspired — all in a safe, community-driven environment.
